Nadiehzda Aguado Update

December 24, 2012 (Managua, NI) - There is some good news about Nadi.  Our friend and partner, Juan Rodriguez, gave us a report that she was doing better.  Nadi's mother told Juan that she was semi-conscious and they thought that she had tried to speak.  There is still some concern about her eye injury so they are keeping her eyes closed. (I suppose with bandages.)  She had been undergoing physical therapy while hospitalized and unconscious.

Nadi's mother also told Juan that they wanted to send her home soon but that she would need continuing care.  There was no information about their expectation of how much she would recover.

Nadiehzda Aguado Update

December 6, 2012 (Managua, NI) - Nadi is still unconscious and in grave condition.  After beathing on her own for a short time, she was put back on the respirator.  A tracheotomy was performed and now she is breathing with the respirator through the trach.  Her left eye sustained injury and they are not sure of the damage.

Pastor Christhian tells us that when they pray for her in her presence, her heart rate goes up.  Perhaps this means she can hear and may be somewhat aware.  They have started some physical therapy due to her bedridden state.

Nadiehzda Aguado Seriously Injured in Accident

November 29, 2012 (Managua, NI) - Our dear friend and ministry partner, Nadiehzda Aguado (Nadi), was injured yesterday when she was struck by a vehicle.  She is in intensive care in the Lenin Fonseca Hospital in Managua.  The reports we have so far is that she has broken ribs and that she is unconscious due to swelling in her brain as a result of the blow to her head.  Surgery is planned for later this morning (about 11 CST).

Many of you know her personally and I know all of you will join us in lifting her up in prayer, asking for healing of this bright young woman.  She has devoted her life to the ministry of the gospel and wants nothing less than that God be glorified.

2012/08/26 Three More Events Behind Us

Since my last post we have had three events.

5th Liberty Baptist Church in Managua hosted our team from Austin Baptist Church (Austin, Texas).  Bob and Gail Meade also joined us again.  The host church is in the Hugo Chavez Barrio of Managua.  Lots of children, teenagers and adults heard the message of hope.  The church is busily doing follow-up and we've heard a great report already about the response.

Rock of My Salvation Baptist Church hosted our family team.  Meadowridge Community Baptist Church (Fort Worth, TX) and Eastside Baptist Church (Fort Smith, AR) sent great families to do the work.  Bob and Gail were able to invest three weeks with us, so they were on this team also.

University of Central America (UCA) was the final event of this summer.  Trisha and I along with Josue and Juan held English classes for 60 university students.  Again, we saw a great response to the message of the gospel.

Watch for an upcoming email update.

P.S.  Don't forget to reserve your place at our 2012 Celebration Banquet.  Here is the link http://events.r20.constantcontact.com/register/event?oeidk=a07e66nlx3n66ceea23&llr=gik7fucab

Today we start the next ministry at the Rock of My Salvation Baptist Church in the Linda Vista area of Managua.  This will be one of our family team ministries which will include 6 children and their parents as well as some other adults.  Pray for us as we reach children, teens and adults in a very depressed area of Managua.

2012-06-08 Pray for the Leon Team

Tomorrow (Saturday) we will meet the team at the airport in Managua and go directly to Leon.  We will spend the week using the Practically Speaking English course to reach children, teens and adults with the gospel of Christ.  Pray for our work as we share Christ with each and every one.  In addition, we will have an evangelistic Bible study for the teachers of the Christian school that is run by First Baptist Church of Leon, our host church.  Many of these teachers do not know Christ personally, so we plan to introduce them to our Lord in a personal way.  Please pray for us!

2012-06-02 New Opportunities at the University of Central America

New for 2012
We are challenging ourselves, and you, to reach more people with the gospel in second half of 2012 than in any previous year.

We had our initial meeting with the University of Central America (UCA) in Managua about bringing our Practically Speaking English Course to their campus.  The result was very positive, yet we need one more approval which we think is just a formality.

If approved, we are going to try and schedule an event there for mid-August.  Pray for us to receive the final approval and a great date for the first event on this campus.

2012-05-30 Gallo Pinto - A Nicaraguan National Dish

One of the great experiences of travel is to taste a lot of different national dishes.  One of the favorites among our short-term missionaries is one of the national dishes of Nicaragua.  Variants of this dish are found all over Central America, but Nicaragua (and Costa Rica) claim to have originated the dish.  Almost every household has this dish everyday and many for every meal.  It can be the main dish or a side dish.  Enjoy!

A lot of people have asked for a recipe, so here is one.  (A printable copy can be found by clicking here.)

Gallo Pinto

Ingredients
2 tablespoons canola oil
1 medium onions, finely chopped
2 garlic cloves, minced
3 cups cooked white rice
2 cups cooked black beans, drained and rinsed
1 teaspoon ground cumin
1 teaspoon ground coriander
1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
2 -3 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
salt & freshly ground black pepper, to taste
fresh cilantro (optional)
sliced green onions (optional)
Directions
  1. Note that the beans and the rice should be cooked and ready before you start these steps.
  2. Heat oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
  3. Add onion and sauté until it just begins to soften and turns color.
  4. Add garlic and sauté for about 5 minutes, or until onion is golden.
  5. Add spices and Worcestershire, and stir into onion and garlic.
  6. (The first time I made this, I was afraid to add the full 3 Tbsp of Worcestershire, but the addition of the rice balances the flavor out).
  7. Next, add the beans and then the rice.
  8. Combine the rice and beans evenly and cook until mixture is heated through.
  9. Add salt and pepper to taste and serve hot.
  10. Garnish with some chopped cilantro or green onions as you like.
